Clearing Space for the New: Learning to Trust Your Intuition

What does it mean to clear space for something new? What does it actually mean to let go?

Letting go is the process of clearing away the energy, things, people, and places that are no longer serving our greatest good or our highest potential. Sometimes, we know exactly what needs to go. Other times, we feel caught between what we know deep down and what we are afraid to admit.

And this is where we have to ask ourselves: Is it doubt? Is it fear? Or is it intuition?

Intuition is quiet and certain. It doesn’t shout, but it is clear. When you ask yourself a question—especially when you’re faced with an important decision—what is the first voice you hear?

You may hear your intuition first, and then another voice creeps in. Or maybe it shouts. Fear.

Intuition doesn’t beg. Fear does. Intuition doesn’t force. But it will keep returning.

Our intuition is always communicating with us, but we often become so distracted by outside voices, expectations, and our own fears that we stop hearing it.

If you’re feeling lost, you can begin rebuilding that connection in very small ways. Ask yourself throughout the day: What is my body craving right now? Do I want to eat, move, create, or rest?

Then, listen—and follow through.

The more you practice asking yourself these small questions and honoring the answers, the more trust you build with yourself. You begin to remember that you are someone you can rely on.

I’ve explored this through making art. From the color I choose, to the brushstroke, to the pace, to when I decide to stop, my intuition is always there guiding me. I don’t have to know exactly where the painting is going. I simply have to listen to what wants to happen next.

And in that process, I’ve learned something beautiful:

I am never alone.

So why do we fear?

Because we want control. We want certainty. We want to know how everything is going to unfold before we take the first step.

But life has a funny way of teaching us that we must trust because life isn’t certain. We don’t know how or when everything will happen. We don’t know what the next chapter will look like, or who will be there when we arrive.

But perhaps we don’t need to know.

We can trust that what is meant for us will find us. It will make way.

Sometimes we ignore red flags because we want something so badly, but we don’t believe we can have it—or build it—on our own. So we give our power away to other people, places, or circumstances because we’re afraid of what might happen if we choose ourselves.

But look how far you’ve come.

Look at how many steps, turns, twists, trials, and tribulations have led you here—to this exact moment. Think about how many challenges you’ve survived, how many lessons you’ve learned, and how many triumphs and victories have shaped you.

You aren’t starting from scratch.

You have a lifetime of experiences and lessons that have accumulated over time, shaping you into who you are today.

And look—You made it through.

Trust that you can, and will, make it through again.

You’ve got you. The universe is on your side. And your intuition is always there to guide you.

To connect more deeply with our intuition, we have to clear away what is distracting us and clouding our minds.

We have to find quiet. We have to find peace within ourselves so we can truly hear—to truly listen.

We have to reconnect with our own voice, our own wants, and our own desires. Not the voices, wants, and desires of everyone around us.

And this may feel new to you.

It did for me.

For a long time, I lived my life doing what other people wanted from me. Taking control of my own life felt strange. I felt terrible hurting or disappointing other people—so much so that I would stay in places long past their due date simply to avoid the pain and frustration of leaving.

Only to realize that I was creating even more pain for myself.

Sometimes, what we need to let go of isn’t necessarily a person or a place. Sometimes, it’s the version of ourselves that learned to abandon our own needs in order to keep everyone else comfortable.

The truth is, you probably know what you want.

But what is stopping you from going after it?

Often, it’s fear. A lack of belief. Not feeling worthy. Not feeling like you’re enough.

These have been some of my greatest setbacks.

Feeling ashamed of my differences. My uniqueness. The parts of myself that I thought might be too much for other people.

And what happens when you shame yourself?

You repress the very things that make you you.

You conform.

And suddenly, life starts to feel gray.

Your true colors want to shine brightly, but you don’t allow yourself to. You dim your light because you think that’s what you need to do in order to be liked and loved by everyone around you.

You think that if you are fully yourself, you’ll be too much.

That you’ll shine too brightly.

But darling…

What if that’s exactly what you were born to do?

What if you were born to shine unapologetically brightly? To take up space. To express your voice, your passions, your creativity, and your truth without comparison, worry, or doubt—but from a place of deep joy and authenticity.

Connecting with your inner child can be another beautiful way to reconnect with the path you’re meant to walk.

Ask her: What do you want to do?

How does she want to dress? How does she want to play? What would make her happy?

Sometimes the answers are surprisingly simple.

Then ask your present self: What do I need right now to create the life and dreams of my future self?

Your past, present, and future selves are all working together.

Your inner child reminds you what brings you joy. Your present self gets to make the choices. And your future self is waiting on the other side of the courage it takes to begin.

With the help of your intuition, you may already know exactly what you need to do.

Trust that.

Sometimes, letting go doesn’t mean you stopped loving.

You can love someone deeply and still know that something is no longer right for you. You can be grateful for what something gave you, for the memories you shared, and for the person you became because of it—and still choose to walk away.

Letting go isn’t always rejection.

Sometimes, it is self-respect.

Sometimes, it is choosing yourself after years of choosing everyone else.

And sometimes, the hardest thing to release isn’t the person, place, or thing itself. It’s the story you created about what you thought it was supposed to become. The future you imagined. The life you thought you were going to have. The version of yourself you thought you needed to be.

You don’t have to make something bad in order for it to be over.

You don’t need a dramatic reason to honor what your intuition is telling you.

Sometimes, “This no longer feels right for me” is enough.

And that’s okay.

Letting go can feel terrifying because we often think we need to know what comes next before we’re willing to release what we already know isn’t right.

But maybe that’s not how life works.

Maybe your intuition isn’t here to give you the entire map.

Maybe it is simply here to show you the next step.

And sometimes, that’s enough.

You don’t have to know how everything will work out. You don’t have to know who will be there, where you’ll live, what you’ll become, or exactly how your dreams will unfold.

You only have to be willing to listen to the next honest thing within you—and have the courage to follow it.

So let go of the fear.

Let go of the ways you’ve learned to stay small and stagnant. Let go of the need to have all the answers. Let go of the voices that have convinced you that you aren’t enough, that you are too much, or that you need someone else’s permission to become who you are.

Reconnect with your body. Your heart. Your mind. Your spirit.

Carve out a life that is yours.

Ask yourself every day: What do I want? What would make me happy? What is calling me?

Then listen.

Notice what—and who—is there.

There is your answer.

And trust in the unfolding.

There is greatness ahead of you if you believe it and are willing to put in the work to meet it.

You are not starting over.

You are not starting from scratch.

You are carrying everything you’ve learned with you.

And perhaps clearing space isn’t about creating an empty life.

Perhaps it’s about creating enough room to finally hear yourself clearly—and allowing what is truly meant for you to find its way in.
